Consenting to a search of your house is basically giving up and waiving your 4th Amendment Constitutional right to be free of unlawful searches and seizures. Therefore, never give police this consent.
The cops may decide to search your home anyhow. But as long as you didn't consent, a criminal defense lawyer can later go into court and challenge the search by way of a suppression motion. If granted, all the evidence discovered through the search will be thrown out of court and often the case will be dismissed.
